Tribute to the French Foreign Legion

..

In remembrance of the Battle of Camerone, April 30th, 1863.

65 of them led by Captain Jean DANJOU were there that day. Colonel Milan commanded a strength of 2,000 Mexican soldiers. Milan demanded that Danjou and soldiers surrender, noting the Mexican Army’s numeric superiority. Danjou replied: “We have munitions. We will not surrender.” He then swore to fight to the death, an oath which was seconded by the men. At 5 pm, only 12 Légionnaires remained around 2nd Lt. Maudet. Soonafter, with ammunition exhausted, the last of Danjou’s soldiers, numbering only five under the command of Lt. Maudet, mounted a bayonet charge rather than surrendering. READ FURTHER HERE >>>>>

Every Legionnaire must know by heart the “Legionnaire’s Code of Honour”. The Legionnaires spend many hours learning it, reciting it, and then getting the vocal synchronisation together:

* Légionnaire, you are a volunteer serving France with “Honour and Fidelity”.
* Every legionnaire is your brother-in-arms, regardless of his nationality, race, or religion. You will demonstrate this by strict solidarity which must always unite members of the same family.
* Respect of traditions, devotion to your leaders, discipline and comradeship are your strengths, courage and loyalty your virtues.
* Proud of your status as Legionnaire, you display this in your uniform, which is always impeccable, your behaviour always dignified but modest, your living quarters always clean.
* An elite soldier, you will train rigorously, you will maintain your weapon as your most precious possession, you are constantly concerned with your physical form.
* A mission is sacred, you will carry it out until the end respecting laws, customs of war, international conventions and, if necessary, at a risk of your life.
* In combat, you will act without passion and without hate, you will respect the vanquished enemy, you will never abandon your dead or wounded, nor surrender your arms.

4/26/2010 - DYESS AIR FORCE BASE, Texas (AFNS) - The non-nuclear B-1 Lancer has adapted from a strategic mission to a close-air support role, and will continue to play an effective part in today’s fight in Afghanistan and Iraq, according to leaders here.

While the remaining bombers in the Air Force inventory transferred to Air Force Global Strike Command, the B-1 has become the go-to airframe when combatant commanders want a show of force or support for ground troops.

“The predominance of what we are doing right now in theater is close-air support; non-traditional intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance; and armed overwatch” said Col. Charlie Catoe, 7th Operations Group commander. “We are supporting the troops on the ground.”   READ FULL ARTICLE >>>>>
