Final approach – How to read VASI and PAPI lights

The VASI (Visual Approach Slope Indicator) and the PAPI (Precision Approach Path Indicator) are systems of lights that provide guidance information to help pilots acquire and maintain the correct approach to an airfield. They are generally located beside the runway. These lights can be seen from up to 8 kilometers (5 miles) during the day and up to 32 kilometers (20 miles) or more at night. MANAMA, Bahrain (NNS) — An E-2C Hawkeye from Carrier Airborne Early Warning Squadron (VAW) 121 stationed aboard USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69) crashed at sea March 31 while operating in the North Arabian Sea.

Three of the four crew members have been recovered and search and rescue efforts for the fourth crew member are currently underway.
