The trial took place in The Hague yesterday April 15, 2011. According to the ICTY website, Judge Alphonsus Orie, “This case was about whether Serb civilians in the Krajina region were the targets of crimes and whether the accused should be held criminally liable for these crimes.”
The ICTY (International Criminal Tribunal for former Yugoslavia) has declared Ante Gotovina guilty, as a member of a joint criminal enterprise – during Operation Storm in the summer of 1995 – of the following charges:
- persecution as a crime against humanity
- deportation as a crime against humanity
- plunder of public and private property as a violation of the laws or customs of war
- wanton destruction as a violation of the laws or customs of war
- murder as a crime against humanity
- murder as a violation of the laws or customs of war
- inhumane acts as a crime against humanity
- cruel treatment as a violation of the laws or customs of war
Gotovina has been sentenced to 24 years of imprisonment. Mladen Markac has been convicted (18 years of imprisonment), and Ivan Cermak, has been acquitted. Tens of thousands (300,000 according to some reports) of Serbs were forced to flee the Krajina region to find refuge in Bosnia and Serbia. As Franjo Tudjman, former president of Croatia is dead, he will not be convicted. You can read the judgement summary here >>>>>
