Former Yugoslavia NEWS – Goran Hadzic, last fugitive arrested

The former president of the Republic of Serbian Krajina (RSK)has been arrested in Serbia today after eight years on the run. According to the UN ICTY, “Goran Hadžić is charged on the basis of individual criminal responsibility (Article 7(1) of the Statute of the Tribunal), with:
• Persecutions on political, racial or religious grounds; extermination; murder; torture; inhumane
acts; deportation and forcible transfer (crimes against humanity, Article 5)
• Murder; torture; cruel treatment; wanton destruction of villages, or devastation not justified by
military necessity; destruction or wilful damage done to institutions dedicated to education and
religion; and plunder of public or private property (violations of laws or customs of war, Article 3)”

Ratko Mladic arrest – Serbian president calls on reconciliation

Ratko Mladic was arrested this morning May 26, 2011. He was caught in the village of Lazarevo, in Vojvodina, Serbia. It has been reported that Ratko Mladic was picked up by the Serbian police but president Boris Tadic stated that the fugitive was caught by the Serbian Security Intelligence Agency in his cousin’s house.

Mladic should be extradited to the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia in a couple of days so that he can be tried. President Boris Tadic declared that this arrest would bring Serbia one step closer to full reconciliation in the Balkan region.

According to the case sheet of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY), Ratko Mladic is indicted for:

  • Genocide; complicity in genocide;
  • Persecutions on political; racial and religious grounds; extermination; murder; deportation (crimes against humanity, Articles 5 and 7)
  • Murder, unlawfully inflicting terror upon civilians, cruel treatment, attacks on civilians, taking of hostages (violation of the laws or customs of war, Articles 3 and 7)

The UN ICTY has already indicted – among the most wanted ones – the former Serbian president Slobodan Milosevic; the Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic; Croatian Ante Gotovina – recently sentenced; and 158 other men. As Franjo Tudjman, former president of Croatia is dead, he will not be convicted. The former president of the RSK (Republic of Serbian Krajina), Goran Hadzic would be the last fugitive.

More than 200,000 people died during the latest Yugoslav wars. May they rest in peace.

War crimes committed against Krajina Serbs recognized by UN ICTY

The trial took place in The Hague yesterday April 15, 2011. According to the ICTY website, Judge Alphonsus Orie, “This case was about whether Serb civilians in the Krajina region were the targets of crimes and whether the accused should be held criminally liable for these crimes.

The ICTY (International Criminal Tribunal for former Yugoslavia) has declared Ante Gotovina guilty, as a member of a joint criminal enterprise – during Operation Storm in the summer of 1995 – of the following charges:

  • persecution as a crime against humanity
  • deportation as a crime against humanity
  • plunder of public and private property as a violation of the laws or customs of war
  • wanton destruction as a violation of the laws or customs of war
  • murder as a crime against humanity
  • murder as a violation of the laws or customs of war
  • inhumane acts as a crime against humanity
  • cruel treatment as a violation of the laws or customs of war

Gotovina has been sentenced to 24 years of imprisonment. Mladen Markac has been convicted (18 years of imprisonment), and Ivan Cermak, has been acquitted. Tens of thousands (300,000 according to some reports) of Serbs were forced to flee the Krajina region to find refuge in Bosnia and Serbia. ENERGY – Trans-Balkan pipeline to be launched early 2013

15:19 06/07/2010 Burgas-Alexandroupolis is a project between Russia, Greece and Bulgaria to pump Russian and Caspian oil from the Bulgarian Black Sea port of Burgas to the Greek Aegean port of Alexandroupolis. The three countries signed an agreement to build the 280-km (174 mile) Trans-Balkan pipeline in 2007, following several years of talks.
