<p align="justify">The 2017 opener has been full of surprises. A victory of Mathias Dolderer was expected in Abu Dhabi today but the Czech Martin Sonka and his Zivko Edge 540 V3 had the last word thanks to his first victory in this competition. The German champion finished fourth. Two French pilots &#8211; Nicolas Ivanoff and François Le Vot &#8211; reached the Final 8 but failed to go through. Master Class results: Sonka (CZE) 15 points, Velarde (ESP) 12 pts, McLeod (CAN) 9 pts, Dolderer (GER) 7 pts, Ivanoff (FRA) 6 pts, Goulian (USA) 5 pts, Bolton (CHI) 4 pts, Le Vot (FRA) 3 pts, Brageot (FRA) 2 pts, Hall (AUS) 1 pt. The next race is to be hold in San Diego on April 15 &amp; 16.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">Marcel Dassault was one of the greatest engineers in aviation history. He studied aeronautics in Paris, in the Higher Aeronautics and Mechanical Building School &#8211; now <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%89cole_nationale_sup%C3%A9rieure_de_l'a%C3%A9ronautique_et_de_l'espace" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">SUPAERO</a> &#8211; in 1913, in the same entry as Mikhail Gurevitch who designed the MiG-1, MiG-15, and MiG-21. Dassault developed &#8211; as explained by Luc Berger, the Dassault-Aviation historian, in the video &#8211; a far better propeller for he had found out a lack of efficiency in the propellers of the Caudron G.3 aeroplanes. Dassault called his masterpiece « Hélice Éclair » (Lightning propeller). It is deemed to be the first line-production propeller, and the best one at that time. <a href="/2010/09/11/a-must-in-chivalry-when-guynemer-spared-udet-after-firing-through-his-wing/">Georges GUYNEMER</a> and <a href="/2014/12/22/among-greatest-pilots-maxime-lenoir-destiny/">Maxime LENOIR</a> were among the first aces to use the Eclair on their SPAD VII and Nieuport. Dassault produced the MD 315 Flamant twin engine just after WWII. Then, came the first French fighter jet, the MD 450 Ouragan as early as 1949. Marcel Dassault used to say:</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">And Dassault kept building so many graceful and sleek aircraft: Mystère, Etendard, <a href="/tag/mirage/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Mirage</a>, Falcon, and of course the magnificent <a href="/category/aircraft/fighters/multirole-aircraft/rafale-multirole-aircraft-aircraft/">Rafale</a>. Dassault has even tested a high-tech drone called <a href="/tag/neuron/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">nEUROn</a>. Contrary to the common belief, three quarters of Dassault-Aviation&rsquo;s production is dedicated to civilian aviation and more particularly executive jets. Dassault développa (commme l&rsquo;explique Luc Berger, historien spécialiste de Dassault, dans la vidéo) une bien meilleure hélice car il avait découvert sur les Caudrons G.3 un manque d&rsquo;efficacité à ce niveau. <p style="text-align: justify;">Et Dassault poursuivit sa conception de tant d&rsquo;avions aux lignes gracieuses et épurées: Mystère, Etendard, Mirage, Falcon, et bien sûr le magnifique Rafale. Dassault a même testé en 2012 un drone à la pointe de la technologie, le nEUROn. Contrairement aux idées reçues, les trois quarts de la productin de Dassault-Aviation&rsquo;s production est tournée vers l&rsquo;aviation civile et plus particulièrement les jets d&rsquo;affaire. <p style="text-align: justify;">The stealth drone demonstrator « <strong>nEUROn</strong> » designed by <strong>Dassault Aviation</strong>, performed her maiden flight this morning at Istres Dassault Flight Test Center.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Dassault along with DGA &#8211; French Defense Procurement Agency, and nEUROn customer &#8211; successfully conducted this first flight test of the European UCAV (Unmanned Combat Air Vehicle).</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">The nEUROn project <strong>FCAS</strong> (Future European fighter Combat Air System) , launched in 2005, involves France, Italy, Sweden, Spain, Greece and Switzerland. Some parts or elements of this aircraft &#8211; flight controls maybe &#8211; would come from the Dassault <strong>Falcon 7X</strong>.</p>

<p>According to a consultation with the customers, 96% of them want more environmentally sustainable aeroplanes. The aircraft of the future will have to be fully recyclable, more sustainable ie eco-efficient, and less stressful:</p>

<p>Now, the leading aircraft manufacturer is using the feedback to paint its vision of sustainable aviation in 2050.</p>
<p>Airbus had unveiled a <a href="https://airforces.fr/2011/06/16/airbus-visionary-project-transparent-airliner/" title="Airbus cabin concept">revolutionary concept cabin</a> through images of a transparent airliner design, last year.</p>
<p>There is a need among the passengers to reduce the time spent in airports. The new Airbus concept cabin will integrate an additional door for faster boarding, and exit. This airliner of the future will reduce its noise, and carbon emmissions. It will use the latest technologies – bionic structure, blended airframe, enhanced laminar flow and noise reduction; blended U-tail, biomorphing seats able to collect the passenger&rsquo;s body energy, cutting-edge relaxation systems, human body thermal recycling, dramatic panoramic view, World Wide Web access, round of golf, etc. Watch the video:</p>

Its 2,021-meter long runway &#8211; even though it was extended in 2009 as it was 1,863 metres long only &#8211; is one of the shortest ones among the international airports. A very dangerous hillside at the end of the runway was removed in 2009 too. This airport was ranked second in this top 10 before.</li>
<li><a title="Courchevel airport, France" href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Courchevel_Altiport" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><strong>Courchevel Airport or Altiport</strong></a> (IATA: CVF – ICAO: LFLJ) is an airfield that serves Courchevel, a ski resort in the French Alps. Its <a title="Courchevel airport, France" href="https://www.google.fr/maps/search/courchevel+airport/@45.397109,6.634669,16z/data=!3m1!1e3?hl=fr&amp;dg=dbrw&amp;newdg=1" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><strong>525-metre long runway has a slope at an 18.5 percent incline</strong></a>. There is no ILS, and no go-around procedure. Courchevel is a difficult approach as ski runs are in the vicinity of its upslope runway. Moreover, the airport&rsquo;s elevation is at 2,008 metres (6,588 ft).</li>
<li><a title="Gibraltar International Airport" href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gibraltar_Airport" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><strong>Gibraltar International Airport</strong></a> or North Front Airport (IATA: GIB, ICAO: LXGB) is located in the British overseas territory of Gibraltar, and belongs to the UK Ministry of Defence though it is a civilian airport too. There are around 3,000 aircraft movements per year. <a title="Gibraltar International Airport and main road in the middle" href="https://www.google.fr/maps/search/gibraltar+airport/@36.150507,-5.349011,17z/data=!3m1!1e3?hl=fr&amp;dg=dbrw&amp;newdg=1" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><strong>The main road intersects the airport runway</strong></a>, and the road traffic is stopped whenever an airplane takes off, or lands.</li>
<li><a title="Hong Kong Kai Tak Airport" href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kai_Tak_Airport" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><strong>Hong Kong Kai Tak International Airport</strong></a> (IATA: HKG, ICAO: VHHH) was an international airport until 1998. It was shut down, and then replaced by the new <a title="Chek Lap Kok International Airport, Hong Kong" href="https://www.google.fr/maps/search/Chek+Lap+Kok+airport,+Sky+Plaza+Road,+Hong+Kong/@22.301167,113.927021,13z/data=!3m1!1e3?hl=fr&amp;dg=dbrw&amp;newdg=1" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><strong>Hong Kong International Airport at Chek Lap Kok</strong></a>, 30 km to the west. There are mountains, and skyscrapers to the north of <a title="Kai Tak Airport, Hong Kong" href="https://www.google.fr/maps/@22.316413,114.203739,3a,75y,90t/data=!3m5!1e2!3m3!1s12325125!2e1!3e10?hl=fr&amp;dg=dbrw&amp;newdg=1" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><strong>Kai Tak Airport</strong></a>, and its runway faces the ocean. Landing on this runway is particularly difficult.</li>
<li><a title="Los Roques Airport, Venezuela" href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Los_Roques_Airport" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><strong>Los Roques Airport</strong>,</a> or Aeropuerto Los Roques, in Spanish (IATA: LRV, ICAO: SVRS). It is a domestic airport with a one-kilometre long runway on the El Gran Roque island, Venezuela.</li>

Viral videos, and pictures are regularly posted on the Web as the runway threshold is only a few meters from the beach, and tourists can feel the turbulence, and even the blast of heavy aircraft when they land, or take off.</li>
<li><a title="Madeira Airport" href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Madeira_Airport" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><strong>Madeira Airport</strong></a> (IATA: FNC, ICAO: LPMA), or <a title="Madeira Airport" href="https://www.google.fr/maps/search/funchal+airport/@32.699416,-16.775265,14z/data=!3m1!1e3!4m2!2m1!4b1?hl=fr&amp;dg=dbrw&amp;newdg=1" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><strong>Funchal Airport</strong></a> (as Funchal is the name of the nearest cathedral), is an international airport in Santa Catarina, Santa Cruz, Madeira, Portugal. Its two runways are a bit short, and surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, and mountains.</li>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><strong>NASA Langley Research Center</strong> in Hampton, Virginia &#8211; New <strong>energy-efficient airplanes</strong> could be designed. Researchers work on designs for viable commercial aircraft which could leave a <strong>low to zero carbon footprint</strong>.</p>
<p>In order to save <strong>jet fuel</strong>, they look at new concepts, processes, and designs that could be lighter. They try to reduce drag, and they try to increase the propulsive efficiency. For this purpose, they try to get rid of metallic airframes, and parts as often as possible.</p>
<p>For instance <strong>NASA</strong> has a newer composite 10 percent lighter than carbon fiber composite. This advanced material is called « Pultruded rod stitched efficient unitized structure » or <strong>PRSEUS</strong>.</p>
<p>The new sleeker designs look like <strong>large wings</strong> without any traditional tube-shaped <strong>fuselage</strong> in the central part since it is blended with the wings. These <strong>futuristic designs</strong> are more fuel efficient as the more lift the plane has, the less it consumes fuel.</p>
<p>The researchers also look at <strong>new energy sources</strong> as it is showed in this video, and in the end there is further information about the <strong>NextGen</strong> project which could save fuel too, thanks to this new form of air traffic management: </p>

<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 14pt; text-align: justify;">Panic onboard &#8211; That is what happened on a JetBlue aircraft last week. The captain dashed to the bathroom&rsquo;s door which was locked, got jittery, then running along the aisle, he hollered out insane things such as « They&rsquo;re going to take us down! ». The passengers wrestled the pilot down, tied him up with seat belts, and he was handed over to the police after landing.</span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 14pt;">An incident of this kind had already been reported two weeks before. An American Airlines flight attendant had been giving the safety instructions just before takeoff. She suddenly ranted about mechanical issues which were immediately refuted by the other cabin crew members. She kept speaking incoherently about Al-Qaeda, and the 9/11 attacks, about her fears of crashing, etc. A few people managed to wrestle her down, and the passengers were startled and scared as they could hear her blood-curdling screams when she was being handcuffed by the police.</span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 14pt;">According to these reports, these insane behaviors are believed to be air-rage cases but the flight attendant who got temporarily mad would be deemed bipolar by doctors, and her condition could explain her behavior. As far as the JetBlue pilot is concerned, his neighbors cannot understand as they would see him as a kind person.</span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 14pt;">Another scary situations occurred in flight this week on Monday April 2, 2012. 80-year-old Helen Collins landed the Cessna 414 twin-engine aircraft in which the pilot &#8211; her husband &#8211; died a few minutes before at the controls!</span></p>

<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 14pt;">Last but not least, HATS OFF to Braden Blennerhassett, an Australian pilot who never panicked last Tuesday as a SNAKE popped out from the dashboard; slithered down his leg while he was landing! <p>November 1, 2011 &#8211; A commercial aircraft performed an emergency landing onto Frederic Chopin International Airport two hours ago. The LOT Polish Airlines B-767 that had taken off from Newark had then been circling over Poland&rsquo;s capital for an hour as a landing gear failure had been reported. The belly-landing unfolded perfectly, and the firefighters responded immediately. No casualties have been reported among the crew members and the 230 passengers.</p>

<p>It first happened on Monday September 5, 2011. A Nepal Airlines flight was cancelled at Tribhuvan International Airport, Kathmandu.</p>
<p>Do you guess why? The flight attendants spotted a stowaway mouse onboard their B-757 bound to Bangkok! The small rodent fled from the galley&rsquo;s pantry, and rushed from a box of drinks to the back of the cabin although the 113 passengers did not notice the tiny stowaway.</p>
<p>The mouse was finally caught thanks to a glue trap. The jetliner was grounded for more than eleven hours.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Then, the same Boeing 757 &#8211; this time bound to Kathmandu &#8211; was grounded at Hong Kong International Airport on Tuesday September 6, in the evening.</p>
<p>The reason: the pilots spotted a mouse in the cockpit just before the airplane departure. The aircraft has not been cleared to take off because this mouse was trapped but then escaped, and would still be on the loose. The 84 passengers were rerouted on a Dragonair aircraft.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>As far as flight safety is concerned, an aircraft cannot take off with a mouse moving freely onboard as it can gnaw the wiring, and therefore represents a potentiel danger.</p>
<p>It can only be caught or trapped. However, NAC (Nepal Airlines Corporation) could not poison any mouse for a small animal can damage an airplane even if it is dead somewhere, and particularly if in contact with a vital part of the plane.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Regarding the 2009 Air France Rio-Paris crash, and according to the BEA investigation, it seemed to show a lack of training. But it now seems to be more complicated- it turns up that the elements of the report on the investigation were actually incomplete. This scoop &#8211; according to this France24 video &#8211; comes from the French paper La Tribune. Several elements would have been taken out of this report, and more importantly an element about a malfunctioning stall alarm:</p>
