This is about <a href="https://airforces.fr/tag/voice-communications/">voice communications</a> and aviation English. This conversation is rather easy to listen to. The experienced pilot &#8211; Clyde Romero &#8211; gives his advice. He helps us understand the challenge between pilots and air traffic controllers when it comes to voice communications. However, would it be possible to implement a large-scale standard aviation english teaching program?<br />
La célèbre chaîne radio Voice Of America vient de publier un entretien intéressant sur les communications vocales et l&rsquo;anglais de l&rsquo;aviation. Cette conversation est plutôt facile à écouter. Le pilote expérimenté, Clyde Romero, donne son avis. Il nous aide à comprendre le challenge entre pilotes et contrôleurs de la circulation aérienne lorsqu&rsquo;il s&rsquo;agit des communications vocales. Cependant, serait-il possible de mettre en place un program d&rsquo;enseignement d&rsquo;anglais aéronautique standard à grande échelle?</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Dear Friends, I often tell my student pilots that it is wise to hold on before taking off when another aircraft has just taken off. Even two minutes is not enough sometimes because the wake turbulence may move in an unpredictable way &#8211; rather sideways &#8211; depending on the wind but not only. You can watch a previous post in which a spectacular uncontrolled roll happened: <a href="/2016/03/06/must-see-weird-takeoff-explained/">http://airforces.fr/2016/03/06/must-see-weird-takeoff-explained/</a> I have repeated that over and over &#8211; waiting is as wise as safe:</p>
<p><center><iframe loading="lazy" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/lnT3sUkK738" width="560" height="315" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen"></iframe></center>We cannot see clearly what really made the seaplane &#8211; assumed to be a French Canadair CL-415 Superscooper water bomber &#8211; veer off but it was definitely too close to the previous aircraft. Maybe the pilot wanted to do the right thing by saving time to save more lives. Was it because of the bow wake of the flying boat? Because of the air wake turbulence? A human error? A control failure? Or a combination of several factors? Anyway when you see an aircraft of this size taking off, please wait for two minutes before entering the same path. Fortunately, a pole was clipped, the Canadair was damaged, but it could have been worse.</p>

Nous savons que les avions volent. Depuis des décennies, aussi bizarre que cela puisse paraître, on enseigne souvent le théorème de Bernoulli comme l&rsquo;explication principale au phénomène.</em></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">This explanation would make sense if the air particles split at the leading edge of the wing and come together at the trailing edge. However, Cambridge researchers had debunked this flying myth in 2012, and have recently confirmed that Bernoulli&rsquo;s principle cannot explain everything in wing lift. As you can see on the video above, the upper wing air stream travels much faster than the lower wing one. Last but not least, these air streams do not come together at the trailing edge since the upper wing air stream reaches the trailing edge well before the lower wing airflow. Isn&rsquo;t this amazing?</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><em>Cette explication tiendrait si les particules d&rsquo;air se séparaient au bord d&rsquo;attaque de l&rsquo;aile et se rejoignaient au bord de fuite. Cependant, des chercheurs de Cambridge avaient démonté ce mythe du vol en 2012 et viennent de confirmer que le principe de de Bernoulli ne peut pas tout expliquer dans la portance de l&rsquo;aile. Comme vous pouvez le voir sur la vidéo ci-dessus, le flux d&rsquo;air en extrados voyage beaucoup plus vite que celui d&rsquo;intrados. Enfin et surtout, ces flux d&rsquo;air ne se rejoignent pas au bord de fuite puisque le flux d&rsquo;air d&rsquo;extrados atteint le bord de fuite bien avant le flux d&rsquo;intrados. A victory of Mathias Dolderer was expected in Abu Dhabi today but the Czech Martin Sonka and his Zivko Edge 540 V3 had the last word thanks to his first victory in this competition. The German champion finished fourth. Two French pilots &#8211; Nicolas Ivanoff and François Le Vot &#8211; reached the Final 8 but failed to go through. Master Class results: Sonka (CZE) 15 points, Velarde (ESP) 12 pts, McLeod (CAN) 9 pts, Dolderer (GER) 7 pts, Ivanoff (FRA) 6 pts, Goulian (USA) 5 pts, Bolton (CHI) 4 pts, Le Vot (FRA) 3 pts, Brageot (FRA) 2 pts, Hall (AUS) 1 pt. The next race is to be hold in San Diego on April 15 &amp; 16.</p>

Gustav Weisskopf had changed his name into Gustave Whitehead before building his aeroplane whose name was the « Condor », or number 21. Gustave was a German immigrant from Leutershausen in Bavaria, where a splendid museum <a href="https://www-weisskopf-de.translate.goog/?_x_tr_sl=de&amp;_x_tr_tl=en&amp;_x_tr_hl=fr&amp;_x_tr_pto=nui">https://www.weisskopf.de</a> commemorates the feats of the brilliant inventor.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">Two replicas of his plane #21 flew in 1986 in the U.S.A., and in 1997 in Germany. Several books have been written about Gustave Whitehead so far. Susan O&rsquo;Dwyer Brinchman published the latest one last year. Her searching follows her father&rsquo;s, Major William J. O&rsquo;Dwyer, a retired U.S. Air Force Reserve officer who had found early Whitehead’s photos in an attic, in 1963, and researched Whitehead for the next 45 years, interviewing many witnesses. Susan worked with him during the later decades and recently, has found even more. She explains why Whitehead must have been the first in the world to perform a steerable, propelled without catapult, heavier-than-air flight. Note that there are four <strong>stacks</strong> in the vicinity of London. The word « stack » means « holding pattern » here. However, stack can mean another thing in aeronautical and general English. For instance:</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">Marcel Dassault was one of the greatest engineers in aviation history. He studied aeronautics in Paris, in the Higher Aeronautics and Mechanical Building School &#8211; now <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%89cole_nationale_sup%C3%A9rieure_de_l'a%C3%A9ronautique_et_de_l'espace" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">SUPAERO</a> &#8211; in 1913, in the same entry as Mikhail Gurevitch who designed the MiG-1, MiG-15, and MiG-21. Dassault developed &#8211; as explained by Luc Berger, the Dassault-Aviation historian, in the video &#8211; a far better propeller for he had found out a lack of efficiency in the propellers of the Caudron G.3 aeroplanes. Dassault called his masterpiece « Hélice Éclair » (Lightning propeller). It is deemed to be the first line-production propeller, and the best one at that time. <a href="/2010/09/11/a-must-in-chivalry-when-guynemer-spared-udet-after-firing-through-his-wing/">Georges GUYNEMER</a> and <a href="/2014/12/22/among-greatest-pilots-maxime-lenoir-destiny/">Maxime LENOIR</a> were among the first aces to use the Eclair on their SPAD VII and Nieuport. Dassault produced the MD 315 Flamant twin engine just after WWII. Then, came the first French fighter jet, the MD 450 Ouragan as early as 1949. Marcel Dassault used to say:</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">And Dassault kept building so many graceful and sleek aircraft: Mystère, Etendard, <a href="/tag/mirage/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Mirage</a>, Falcon, and of course the magnificent <a href="/category/aircraft/fighters/multirole-aircraft/rafale-multirole-aircraft-aircraft/">Rafale</a>. Dassault has even tested a high-tech drone called <a href="/tag/neuron/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">nEUROn</a>. Contrary to the common belief, three quarters of Dassault-Aviation&rsquo;s production is dedicated to civilian aviation and more particularly executive jets. With a strength of 12,000, and 8,000 aircraft delivered throughout the world since 1945, Dassault is a key market player on a global scale. Dassault-Aviation is 100 years old. <p style="text-align: justify;">Dassault développe de l&rsquo;avionique et de nombreux avions depuis l&rsquo;hélice Eclair en 1916. (voir l&rsquo;interview en français en haut de l&rsquo;article)</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Marcel Dassault était un des plus grands ingénieurs de l&rsquo;histoire de l&rsquo;aviation. Il fit ses études d&rsquo;aéronautique en 1913 à Paris à l&rsquo;École supérieure d&rsquo;aéronautique et de construction mécanique, l&rsquo;ancêtre de <a href="https://www.isae-supaero.fr/fr/">SUPAERO</a>, dans la même promotion que Mikhail Gourevitch, celui même qui concevait ensuite les MiG-1, MiG-15 et MiG-21. Dassault développa (commme l&rsquo;explique Luc Berger, historien spécialiste de Dassault, dans la vidéo) une bien meilleure hélice car il avait découvert sur les Caudrons G.3 un manque d&rsquo;efficacité à ce niveau. Marcel Dassault baptisa son chef d&rsquo;oeuvre l&rsquo;hélice Éclair et elle fût sans doute la première à être produite en chaîne à cette époque. <a href="/2010/09/11/a-must-in-chivalry-when-guynemer-spared-udet-after-firing-through-his-wing/">Georges GUYNEMER</a> et <a href="/2014/12/22/among-greatest-pilots-maxime-lenoir-destiny/">Maxime LENOIR</a> furent parmi les premiers as à utiliser l&rsquo;Éclair sur leur SPAD VII et Nieuport 17. Après la guerre de 39/45, Dassault produisait le bimoteur MD 315 Flamant. Ensuite, vint le premier chasseur français à réaction, le MD 450 Ouragan, dès 1949. Jadis, Marcel Dassault disait:</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">Et Dassault poursuivit sa conception de tant d&rsquo;avions aux lignes gracieuses et épurées: Mystère, Etendard, Mirage, Falcon, et bien sûr le magnifique Rafale. Dassault a même testé en 2012 un drone à la pointe de la technologie, le nEUROn. Contrairement aux idées reçues, les trois quarts de la productin de Dassault-Aviation&rsquo;s production est tournée vers l&rsquo;aviation civile et plus particulièrement les jets d&rsquo;affaire. Dassault et ses 12 000 employés et qui a livré 8 000 avions depuis 1945 à travers le monde, est un acteur majeur du marché mondial.</p>

<p>The French took the lead through Nicolas IVANOFF and François LE VOT in this season-opening air race in Abu Dhabi, UAE on Saturday, March 12, 2016. Ivanoff finished first after a narrow victory since the German Matthias DOLDERER was only 0.110&Prime; behind him. The RBAR biggest surprise came from LE VOT who finished third. It is the first time he has been on the podium. The Australian Matt HALL could not perform as expected as he hit a pylon during the opening round. The Austrian Hannes ARCH was disqualified for surprisingly flying off track. The next race should fit him better since it will be in Spielberg, Austria on April 23rd and 24th.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">Pour la seconde vidéo, on peut ajouter que si les niveaux de vol 55, 75 et 85 (pour les routes magnétiques vers l&rsquo;est) sont valables en VFR (régime de vol à vue), on devra emrunter en vol IFR (vol aux instruments) les niveaux de vol 50, 70, 80 et 90 par exemple. C&rsquo;est à dire qu&rsquo;en IFR on n&rsquo;utilise pas les niveaux de vol se terminant par 5 mais par 0 et cela est valable pour les routes magnétiques allant vers l&rsquo;ouest (FL 80, FL 90, etc). <strong>La règle semi-circulaire</strong> est utile aussi pour le module NRS (Navigation, Réglementation et Sécurité des vols) au <strong>BIA-CAEA</strong>. 										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p style="text-align: justify;">Do you remember that some fighter pilots could safely eject from underwater back in 1965? Could it be survived? One may wonder but a few ejections were reported. The transcript is below the video. Look at that canopy, it looks like it came from an F-8 Crusader:</p>

<p><u>TRANSCRIPT:</u></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">If your aircraft has provision for underwater ejection, you have a ready-made, secondary escape route. Succesful underwater ejections can be made from any aircraft attitude &#8211; nose down, tail down, and inverted.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Escape by this method requires no preparation other than that recommended for normal seat ejection. There should be at least ten feet of water above you before you can safely eject. Never eject from the surface. With present systems, the chute cannot open with a zero-zero situation (which means at a height of 0 and at a speed of 0). The effect of free-falling 80 feet to water is little different than falling 80 feet to concrete. True, some lucky ones have lived to tell about it. But it is one hell of a gamble.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">When you eject through the canopy underwater, the seat breaks through clearing the way for your body. Because water resistance imposes terrific forces on your head and neck, it is vital to hold the face curtain tight against your head for support. The forces of ejection might cause a momentary blackout. Immediately upon collecting your wits, disconnect yourself from the seat by pulling the emergency release handle breaking your restraints. Now, separate yourself from the seat. This is difficult. You will have to kick and swim violently even though you are disconnected.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">If your chute gets hung up on the seat, do not waste time trying to clear it. Release your riser fittings and swim clear off the chute. Do not inflate flotation equipment until clear of the seat. Remember, surface slowly, exhaling as you go. Remove your oxygen mask.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">While strolling down a street during the summer holidays, I stumbled upon a bar totally dedicated to pilots and aircraft in La Rochelle, France last summer. It was a bit busy on a sunny Saturday afternoon when I saw this sign « LES TÊTES BRÛLÉES » and a shield over the street corner on which I could make out a black sheep. Just above was an inverted-gull-shaped aircraft outline. The picture of a bull terrier on the awning could ring a bell too. This one wore sunglasses &#8211; there must be some fun in there, I mused. « Might it be Pappy Boyington&rsquo;s den? » I wondered.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Some customers let us in and we were standing engrossed with the aviation world as if it were a dream. Flight suits and flight uniforms were hanging over tables. The bar &#8211; where laughter, grins and giggles are the norm &#8211; was surrounded with badges, aviation artifacts, aircraft and pilots photos up on the walls. There were aircraft models in a showcase, and several of them hanging all over the place. Some souvenirs were dedicated to naval aviation. It looked like a small &#8211; though dense &#8211; aviation hall of fame. There was a black sign above the bar featuring a short text in white letters, which said:</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">Sure, it rings a bell! This is the introductory text to the famous series « Baa Baa Black Sheep » about the brave VMA-214 pilots who operated from the Solomon Islands during the WW2, in the Pacific War. I could have heard the theme song from « The Whiffenpoof Song » turned into a drunk-voice, exhausted-though-happy chorus:</p>

<p style="text-align: center;">WHO HAVE LOST OUR WAY.</p>

Everything, even the lavatory walls covered with aviation slang graffiti, are very well in unison with the local atmosphere. Each conversation is focused on flying, pilots, aircraft, and of course fun!</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">There is a sort of an alcove in the back room made up of genuine airplane seats, artifacts, stickers and photos. You can even drink aviation. Even though Les Têtes Brûlées is not a POL depot you can be served a Kerosene, a great cocktail always served with a grin from the waiters. Jérôme, the boss, seem to be widely known in the aviation community, far beyond La Rochelle. Whoever they are. Pilots, flight attendants, crew members, engineers, aerospace lovers, they all know the Black Sheep&rsquo;s den. Aviation geeks, this is a place where you have got to go for you can expect a nice welcome.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">Il y a dans le monde un bon nombre de bars et restaurants consacrés à l&rsquo;aviation et quelquefois à l&rsquo;aérospatiale: en Alabama, Géorgie, Caroline du Nord, New-York, à Londres, Farnborough, dans le Gloucestershire, à Paris, Le Bourget. Il y en a qui ne portent que le nom « aviateur » ou d&rsquo;autres qui rappellent l&rsquo;aviation ou l&rsquo;espace.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Alors que je flânais dans une rue pendant les vacances d&rsquo;été à la Rochelle, je suis tombé tout à fait par hasard sur un bar entièrement dédié aux pilotes et aux avions. C&rsquo;était assez animé en ce samedi après-midi ensoleillé lorsque je vis l&rsquo;enseigne « LES TÊTES BRÛLÉES » surplombant le coin de la rue, sur laquelle on pouvait distinguer un mouton noir.  Juste au dessus, la silhouette d&rsquo;un avion aux ailes en W. L&rsquo;image d&rsquo;un chien bull-terrier sur l&rsquo;auvent en terrasse me rappelait déjà quelque chose&#8230; Ce chien portait des lunettes de soleil &#8211; on doit bien s&rsquo;amuser là dedans, songeai-je. Et voici ce que je me demandais soudain: « Se pourrait-il que cette échoppe soit une des antres de Pappy Boyington? »</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Des clients devant le bar nous firent entrer et nous sommes restés un moment debouts, captivés par cet univers de l&rsquo;aviation, comme si c&rsquo;était en rêve. Des combinaisons de vol et uniformes de personnels navigants étaient suspendus au-dessus des tables. Le bar, où fou-rires, sourires et ricanements semblent de rigueur, était décorés d&rsquo;insignes, de pièces de collection d&rsquo;aviation, de photos d&rsquo;avions et de pilotes qui tapissaient les murs. Il y avait des maquettes d&rsquo;avion dans une vitrine, et plusieurs qui pendaient un peu partout. Des souvenirs évoquaient l&rsquo;Aéronavale. Cela ressemblait à un petit, quoique dense, temple de l&rsquo;aviation. Pour l&rsquo;accueil, au dessus du bar est affiché un panneau noir rappelant une célèbre séries TV américaine en lettres capitales blanches, traduites de l&rsquo;anglais:</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">Bien sûr que cela vous dit quelque chose! Il s&rsquo;agit du générique de la célèbre série « Les Têtes Brûlées » qui retraçait la saga des courageux pilotes de chasse de l&rsquo;escadron VMA-214 qui opéraient depuis les Îles Salomon pendant la seconde guerre mondiale. J&rsquo;aurais pu même entendre la mélodie tirée de « The Whiffenpoof Song » transformée en un refrain à l&rsquo;eau de vie entonné par des voix de soiffards épuisés:</p>

<p style="text-align: center;">QUI SE SONT ÉGARÉS.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;">BÊÊ! BÊÊ! BÊÊ!</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Le mouton noir et cet insigne à l&rsquo;extérieur qu&rsquo;on ne peut pas manquer et les Chance Vought F4U Corsairs à l&rsquo;intérieur, font que cet endroit, dès qu&rsquo;on y met les pieds, respire l&rsquo;histoire de l&rsquo;aviation pour votre bonheur. Tout, même les murs des toilettes, est couvert de graffitis du jargon de l&rsquo;aéronautique à l&rsquo;unisson avec l&rsquo;atmosphère des lieux. Chaque bribe de conversation est tournée vers le vol, les pilotes et les avions et bien sûr on s&rsquo;y amuse beaucoup!</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Il y a un genre d&rsquo;alcôve dans l&rsquo;arrière-salle faite d&rsquo;authentiques sièges d&rsquo;avions récupérés, de pièces de collection, d&rsquo;autocollants et de photos. On peut même boire aviation. Même si les Têtes Brûlées n&rsquo;est pas un dépôt des essences, on peut très bien vous y servir un « KEROSÈNE », un super cocktail toujours accompagné d&rsquo;un grand sourire du personnel de la maison. Il semble que Jérôme, le patron, soit très connu dans la communauté aéronautique et bien au-delà de La Rochelle. Quels qu&rsquo;ils soient, pilotes, PNC, membres d&rsquo;équipage, mécaniciens, passionnés de l&rsquo;aérospatiale, tous connaissent « l&rsquo;antre du mouton noir ». Passionnés d&rsquo;aviation, il faut absolument que vous vous y rendiez parce que vous pouvez être certains qu&rsquo;on va vous y réserver un très bon accueil.</p>
