Ils seront à Limoges ces samedi et dimanche, 8 et 9 juillet 2017. Et de belle manière! C’est l’équipe de la nouvelle présentation acrobatique Alphajet Solo Display qui a plaidé en faveur de l’as tourangeau. Maxime Lenoir, le virtuose du looping en 1914 sur Blériot XI, le meilleur as de la bataille de Verdun sur son Nieuport « MAX » puis son SPAD VII « Trompe la Mort »! Alors que les combats font rage, il est porté disparu le lendemain de la reprise de Fort Douaumont, au nord de Verdun, le 25 octobre 1916. Il est ensuite oublié pendant presque un siècle.

Maxime Lenoir aurait pu rester au fond des oubliettes. Heureusement que le journaliste et auteur Didier Lecoq retrouva la trace de ce virtuose de l’air il y a quelques années. Il parvient à le faire reconnaître au niveau national puisque Maxime Lenoir est retenu pour être mis à l’honneur le 19 septembre 2014. Il est cité comme le héros de l’Indre-et-Loire dans l’opération 100 villes, 100 héros, 100 drapeaux. L’as tourangeau est ensuite célébré dans son village natal de Chargé dans l’Indre-et-Loire à l’occasion de la commémoration de l’armistice le 11 novembre 2016 et du centenaire de sa disparition. Une plaque est apposée à l’entrée de l’école à côté de la mairie. Le même jour, elle est baptisée « École Maxime Lenoir ». Il serait trop long d’énumérer ici les prouesses de l’aviateur civil puis militaire qu’était Maxime Lenoir. Revoir MAX en bleu-blanc-rouge sur un avion était encore impensable il y a quelques mois. De même il était impensable de revoir la présentation acrobatique Alphajet Solo Display, stationnée à l’École de l’Aviation de Chasse de Tours. Ses deux futurs pilotes « Filou » et « Jim », comme par hasard, font partie du trio qui survole Chargé en hommage à l’enfant du pays qui était aussi l’as de Verdun au plus fort de la bataille. Peu de temps après, ils s’entraînent durement avec l’aide de leur coach « Zippo », un ancien pilote de la Patrouille de France, pour peaufiner des numéros aussi audacieux que les loopings de Maxime Lenoir sur son Blériot XI « Backjumper ». Maxime aurait sans doute aimé voir cela, lui qui sauvait la vie de ses camarades en osant des parades acrobatiques au milieu des Fokker en chasse, sur son Nieuport « MAX » et en Caudron et SPAD « Trompe la Mort ». Les mécaniciens ont accompli un travail d’orfèvre en peignant les motifs à tribord de l’escadrille SPA 85 « La folie » dont c’est le centenaire cette année. On reconnaît Eugene Bullard, le boxeur et pilote de chasse de l’escadrille Lafayette, qui a fait l’objet de recherches méticuleuses de Robert Pezzani car ce pilote américain de couleur (rares à l’époque) volait à centre américain de formation au pilotage à Tours, sur l’actuelle base de Parçay-Meslay. C’est à bâbord qu’on distingue clairement la silhouette du buste de Maxime Lenoir avec un magnifique MAX en bleu-blanc-rouge comme autrefois. Jim a disposé les éléments et même redessiné l’inscription « Ajt Lenoir » sur le modèle des peintures sur fond bleu qu’on peut voir sur les fuselages de la Patrouille de France. Celle de l’Alphajet E42 du Solo Display est particulièrement réussie car elle est sur fond blanc. Ceux qui ont eu la chance de l’approcher peuvent témoigner de la beauté de l’ensemble.

De même que MAX repart pour des séries de boucles et de vrilles, l’Alphajet Solo Display renaît de ses cendres. Les deux pilotes tourangeaux on commencé leurs représentations en France et en Espagne (à Léon). Ils ont survolé les 24 Heures du Mans le 17 juin. D’après ce qui est prévu, pour l’instant, ils seront à l’affiche aux meetings aériens énumérés en fin de page.

C’est dans une ambiance bon enfant que s’est déroulée la remise des diplômes du BIA (Brevet d’Initiation Aéronautique) et du CAEA (Certificat d’Aptitude à l’Enseignement Aéronautique) à l’aérodrome de Chartres samedi 1er juillet 2017.

La cérémonie était présidée par Jean-Jacques Wald, coordonnateur académique aéronautique et spatial qui à cette occasion, représentait la rectrice de l’Académie d’Orléans-Tours, Katia Béguin. De nombreux officiels assistaient à l’évènement: la FFA (Fédération Française Aéronautique), de l’Éducation nationale (dont le coordonnateur du BIA pour l’Indre-et-Loire, Claude Fillet) et de l’Armée de l’air qui animait plusieurs stands.

Les CAEA ont commencé à être remis un par un devant plusieurs centaines de personnes dont beaucoup de jeunes passionnés d’aviation.

Les diplômes BIA étaient bien plus nombreux et nécessitaient une organisation qui prenait place dans les hangars avion.

À titre de comparaison, il n’y avait que quatorze diplômes du CAEA pour quelques centaines de diplômes BIA

L’Armée de l’air a ensuite offert un livre de bandes-dessinées «Buck Dany» à tous ceux qui ont obtenu mention très bien au BIA.

Ce n’était pas le plus beau premier juillet qui soit, de mémoire d’aviateur, comme en témoigne le parapluie sur la première photo. Malgré la météo, les sourires étaient sur toutes les lèvres et le show pouvait débuter avec notamment un superbe Pitts au moteur surpuissant capable de suspendre l’appareil sur la tranche, oscillant dans toutes les positions et n’importe où dans le ciel.

Puis vint le tour tant attendu de la reine du ciel, Catherine Maunoury, qui enchanta les jeunes et anciens avec un numéro sur mesure, le plafond étant trop bas, le spectacle habituellement prévu était écarté car trop dangereux. Les spécialistes estimaient la base des nuages à moins de 1000 pieds (300 mètres).

Il est de rares pilotes dans le monde qui, lorsqu’ils quittent la piste, communient totalement avec leur machine. C’est un miracle de les voir évoluer dans les airs. Ces instants ont quelque chose de magique. Peu importe la grisaille, dès que ces virtuoses du ciel décollent, pour les petits comme pour les grands, c’est comme si le Soleil se levait, et même par temps maussade. Catherine fait partie de ces acrobates, ces chevaliers du ciel, comme en témoigne ce superbe reportage:

Bref, retour à Chartres en ce premier samedi de juillet 2017: Catherine s’élance sur son Extra 330 bleu aux parures oranges, pour des manœuvres réduites en hauteur et enchaîne immédiatement des chandelles, virages serrés, retournements, renversements, tonneaux, à facettes, le tout avec une précision et une vivacité qui provoque de nombreux applaudissements des spectateurs conquis.

S’ils n’avaient pas su qu’il s’agissait de la triple championne du monde, Ambassadrice du Musée de l’Air et l’Espace du Bourget et présidente de l’Aéro-Club de France, les amateurs auraient juré qu’il s’agissait de Kirby Chambliss aux commandes, l’Américain qui vient de remporter la dernière compétition du fameux Red Bull Air Race à Budapest. La performance de la célèbre Française est si physique et précise que peu d’hommes au monde peuvent rivaliser avec la virtuose de l’air.

Elle a ensuite eu la gentillesse lors du vin d’honneur, de poser avec Daniel Deneken (instructeur pilote qui œuvre pour le BIA dans la région Centre-Val-de-Loire et pour la conservation des avions anciens pour Canopée, à Chateaudun). À cette occasion, le livre Une autre histoire de l’aviation de Toni Giacoia était présenté au public au stand de la FFA qui lui a gentiment aménagé une place. Ce livre intéresse le BIA puisque des principes du vol y sont évoqués ainsi que l’histoire de l’aviation qui est un des cinq modules de cette formation diplômante. L’histoire de l’as Maxime Lenoir, pionnier de l’aviation et du looping, héros tourangeau de la bataille de Verdun, est abordée dans la seconde partie du livre. Le CAEA quant à lui, nécessite plus de travail car il est d’une valence Bac +2 et il est nécessaire pour enseigner et encadrer des classes de BIA.

Les échanges furent nombreux et tous sont d’accord pour dire qu’entre l’Éducation nationale, la FFA et l’Armée de l’air, le BIA représente une chance de partager ses passions dans des accords gagnant-gagnant. A victory of Mathias Dolderer was expected in Abu Dhabi today but the Czech Martin Sonka and his Zivko Edge 540 V3 had the last word thanks to his first victory in this competition. The German champion finished fourth. Two French pilots – Nicolas Ivanoff and François Le Vot – reached the Final 8 but failed to go through. Master Class results: Sonka (CZE) 15 points, Velarde (ESP) 12 pts, McLeod (CAN) 9 pts, Dolderer (GER) 7 pts, Ivanoff (FRA) 6 pts, Goulian (USA) 5 pts, Bolton (CHI) 4 pts, Le Vot (FRA) 3 pts, Brageot (FRA) 2 pts, Hall (AUS) 1 pt. The next race is to be hold in San Diego on April 15 & 16.

The French took the lead through Nicolas IVANOFF and François LE VOT in this season-opening air race in Abu Dhabi, UAE on Saturday, March 12, 2016. Ivanoff finished first after a narrow victory since the German Matthias DOLDERER was only 0.110″ behind him. The RBAR biggest surprise came from LE VOT who finished third. It is the first time he has been on the podium. The Australian Matt HALL could not perform as expected as he hit a pylon during the opening round. The Austrian Hannes ARCH was disqualified for surprisingly flying off track. The next race should fit him better since it will be in Spielberg, Austria on April 23rd and 24th.

From the flimsy Blériot XI to Sopwiths and Fokkers, the first aces developed early methods that are always taught in fighter schools even though beyond-visual-range air combat has taken over since. Major Charles Tricornot de Rose was considered by many as the father of air fighting as early as 1914. Then as shown in this video, the German ace Oswald Boelcke laid out a first set of rules for dogfighting called the Dicta Boelcke. Pilots’ life expectancy was not measured in years but in weeks.

If the die seems to be cast in Master Class, it is still rolling for the other championship: The top ranking is very tight in Challenger Class as the French Mickael Brageot, the Czech Petr Kopfstein, and the Swedish Daniel Ryfa all have a 28-point total. Just behind, Cristian Bolton, the Chilean pilot comes with 24 points. Only one of them will be allowed to go through to the Master Class next year. The next and last race promises to be a hard fought final in Las Vegas on October 17th & 18th, 2015.

Renovation of  Aéroparc’s Entrance in Buc

For the 100th anniversary of the English Channel crossing by Louis Blériot, a well-documented publication was released in 2009 – « Buc à travers l’aviation« . A Mirage III R was given too, by SECAMIC company. This Dassault recce aircraft can be seen in Avenue Jean Casale between Buc and Toussus-le-Noble, France. The Buc citizens could proudly look back at their prestigious aviation past as Buc and Toussus-le-Noble airfields used to be an aviation history cradle.

Villagers and historians wanted to value their aeronautical heritage in 2012 and they made a decision of setting a renovation project of Blériot’s Aéroparc entrance which is located at the beginning of Guynemer Avenue. Many documents from archives allowed them to incentivize an accurate reconstruction. As the pictures show, the renovation works have already begun as of September 2, 2015.

At the same time, the statue erected to commemorate Jean Casale (1893-1923), WWI ace and Blériot’s test pilot et pilote d’essai aux établissements Blériot, will also be restored for it has been damaged by the effects of time. As far as the Mirage III R is concerned, it would also need a new coat of paint.

Louis Blériot won international renown as well as his presence at the very first Paris Air Show (Salon de l’Aéronautique which occurred at « Le Grand Palais » in Paris instead of Le Bourget) in late 1909 thanks to his Channel crossing on July 25, 1909. He had crossed the English Channel on his Blériot XI monoplane which is still  exhibited at the Musée des Arts et Métiers. Accordingly, Blériot-Aéronautique received a lot of aeroplane orders since then. Louis Blériot wanted to open a flying school. He established his school near Paris, to the south of Versailles on Buc airfield in order to train pilots and test new flying machines. It was inaugurated on November 13th, 1912. The whole airfield and compound was called Aerodrome Louis Blériot.

There was a monumental gate before the main building which looked like a castle. It was the very heart of the school as well as a hotel for the student pilots and a restaurant. Hangars and grandstands were added so as to organise airshows. Many great aviators and aces landed and took off at Blériot’s Aérodrome such as Roland Garros, Maryse Bastié, Maxime Lenoir, Edmond Perreyon and the Swiss John Domenjoz. Célestin Adolphe Pégoud nicknamed « Le roi de l’air » – « King of the air » – was one of the first pilots looping the loop. Here is a video shot on September 21st, 1913 in front of a 200,000 attendance above Blériot’s aerodrome in Buc:

The airfield was very active during WW1 thanks to its SPADs, then in the 1920s. The downturn of the Aéroparc started when Louis Blériot passed away on August 2, 1936. Aéroparc Louis Blériot was occupied by the German troops during WWII and was bombed by the Allies several times in 1944. The Aéroparc facilities were given back to Blériot-Aéronautique but it was left in tatters. The movements stopped in 1966 and it was closed down in 1970 before being demolished a few years after. The remnants of the monumental gate were all that is left from this exceptional past. Therefore, the Aéroparc renovation aims at valuing this site’s aviation history heritage.

Tours French Air Force Base celebrated its centenary this year on Sunday, the 7th of June as the air base was born in late 1915, fielded with the aviation school on Caudron G3. MF33 Flight (1/33 Belfort) was born in Tours in October 1914 but there is no evidence that it was stationed at Parçay-Meslay airfield.

The airshow gathered lots of aviation professionals as well as recreational aviation booths. About 56,000 people attended the event – a bit more than expected. The Belgian F-16 solo display, the Moroccan Marche Verte, the Red Arrows, the Patrouille de France, then the Rafale were the highlights of the beautiful day. The Swiss Army Super Puma helicopter performed an outstanding display, and a P-51 D Mustang and a Spitfire delighted WW2 fighter aircraft enthusiasts. Other flypasts performed by two Dassault Flamant MD.311, de Havilland Vampire and Mosquito made the attendees dream.

The visitors could also admire numerous aircraft in the static display area: RSAF and Luftwaffe Eurofighter Typhoons, a curious Piaggio 149 as its roundel comes from the UPDAF – Uganda Peoples Defense Air Force, a Caudron C.800 glider which looked like the C.25S that were used in the movie « Don’t look now… We’re being shot at! » (La grande vadrouille) flown by famous French actors Bourvil and Louis de Funès. A nice RSAF (Republic of Singapore Air Force) Aermacchi M-346, a Dewoitine 501 which used to be stationed at Tours air base, a few WW2 Piper Cub, Dassault Mirage 2000-D, Mirage 2000-5, Rafale, and last but not least 2 A-10 Warthogs, and many more aircraft.

With the nice weather, cool northbound winds, and the smooth organisation, the event turned out to be a great success.

On the video you can see that shortly after lifting-up to reach the middle part of a loop, the aircraft dived towards the bleachers, and crashed very close to them. According to the news, 3 died, and 54 would have been injured, 12 of which in severe conditions. A Mayday emergency call would have been heard a few seconds before the accident.

The Reno Air Races have been cancelled even if the families insisted on letting the airshow go on. Some videos on the Internet show how violent the impact was. The area has been cordoned off as the NTSB is still investigating, as well as FAA officials were on the spot, and a mass-casualty situation has been reported.

Jimmy Leeward would have tried to dodge the bleachers as his P-51 was going down. The famous pilot would have saved hundreds of potential casualties before he died, according to this eyewitness account:

Remember Guynemer’s mottos: FAIRE FACE (face up to it) was then adopted by the French Air Force Academy (FAFA) as their motto. A few words that well expresses the French pilots’ bravery.

The WWI French ace Georges Guynemer used to say:

– « Il y a une limite à toute chose, et il faut toujours la dépasser. « Everything has a limit which has always got to be surpassed. »
– « Lorsque l’on n’a pas tout donné, on n’a rien donné. » « As long as you have not given your all, you have given nothing »

Loyal to these principles, the French ace took part in several hundreds of aerial combats, crediting 53 victories. He was shot down seven times, and he was admired for he always survived, but that September 11, Ninety-three years ago. The hero took off once again. Outnumbered by German warplanes in a last dogfighting over Belgium. Then, he fell.

Since then, the French Air Force aviators have worn a black tie in sign of mourning.

The Russian pilot Svetlana KAPANINA, has won up to 39 gold medals, two World Air Games, and seven World Championship titles – a record in women category.

Among her feats, she is used to challenging the best male pilots in the world as she has reached the top 4 – and even top 2 – several times in overall competition. Finally, she has been awarded a prestigious medal for being the best pilot of the century.

According to her performance on the videos above, she deserves her nickname « Queen of the skies ». Just watch and enjoy…
