<p style="text-align: justify;">Ils seront à Limoges ces samedi et dimanche, 8 et 9 juillet 2017. Et de belle manière! C&rsquo;est l&rsquo;équipe de la nouvelle présentation acrobatique <a href="https://www.facebook.com/login/?next=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2FAlphajet-Solo-Display-216309128846677%2F" class="broken_link" rel="nofollow"><strong>Alphajet Solo Display</strong></a> qui a plaidé en faveur de l&rsquo;as tourangeau. <a href="https://airforces.fr/2014/12/22/among-greatest-pilots-maxime-lenoir-destiny/"><strong>Maxime Lenoir</strong></a>, le virtuose du looping en 1914 sur Blériot XI, le meilleur as de la bataille de Verdun sur son Nieuport « MAX » puis son SPAD VII « Trompe la Mort »! Alors que les combats font rage, il est porté disparu le lendemain de la reprise de Fort Douaumont, au nord de Verdun, le 25 octobre 1916. Il est ensuite oublié pendant presque un siècle.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">Maxime Lenoir aurait pu rester au fond des oubliettes. Heureusement que le journaliste et auteur <a href="https://aeroplanedetouraine.fr/?s=maxime+lenoir&amp;search=Recherche">Didier Lecoq</a> retrouva la trace de ce virtuose de l&rsquo;air il y a quelques années. Il parvient à le faire reconnaître au niveau national puisque Maxime Lenoir est retenu pour être mis à l&rsquo;honneur le 19 septembre 2014. Il est cité comme le héros de l&rsquo;Indre-et-Loire dans l&rsquo;opération 100 villes, 100 héros, 100 drapeaux. L&rsquo;as tourangeau est ensuite célébré dans son village natal de <a href="https://www.google.fr/maps/place/37530+Charg%C3%A9/@47.4296625,1.0233973,13z/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x47fcb4c4445059d3:0x40dc8d705389080!8m2!3d47.432341!4d1.030288">Chargé</a> dans l&rsquo;Indre-et-Loire à l&rsquo;occasion de la commémoration de l&rsquo;armistice le 11 novembre 2016 et du centenaire de sa disparition. Une plaque est apposée à l&rsquo;entrée de l&rsquo;école à côté de la mairie. Le même jour, elle est baptisée « École Maxime Lenoir ». Il serait trop long d&rsquo;énumérer ici les prouesses de l&rsquo;aviateur civil puis militaire qu&rsquo;était Maxime Lenoir. <p style="text-align: justify;">Revoir MAX en bleu-blanc-rouge sur un avion était encore impensable il y a quelques mois. De même il était impensable de revoir la présentation acrobatique Alphajet Solo Display, stationnée à l&rsquo;École de l&rsquo;Aviation de Chasse de Tours. Ses deux futurs pilotes « Filou » et « Jim », comme par hasard, font partie du trio qui survole Chargé en hommage à l&rsquo;enfant du pays qui était aussi l&rsquo;as de Verdun au plus fort de la bataille. Peu de temps après, ils s&rsquo;entraînent durement avec l&rsquo;aide de leur coach « Zippo », un ancien pilote de la Patrouille de France, pour peaufiner des numéros aussi audacieux que les loopings de Maxime Lenoir sur son Blériot XI « Backjumper ». Maxime aurait sans doute aimé voir cela, lui qui sauvait la vie de ses camarades en osant des parades acrobatiques au milieu des Fokker en chasse, sur son Nieuport « MAX » et en Caudron et SPAD « Trompe la Mort ». Les mécaniciens ont accompli un travail d&rsquo;orfèvre en peignant les motifs à tribord de l&rsquo;escadrille SPA 85 « La folie » dont c&rsquo;est le centenaire cette année. On reconnaît <a href="https://www.defense.gouv.fr/portail/dossiers/le-saviez-vous/eugene-bullard-un-heros-meconnu">Eugene Bullard</a>, le boxeur et pilote de chasse de l&rsquo;escadrille Lafayette, qui a fait l&rsquo;objet de recherches méticuleuses de <a href="https://www.lanouvellerepublique.fr/indre-et-loire/commune/rochecorbon/les-pilotes-americains-en-touraine">Robert Pezzani</a> car ce pilote américain de couleur (rares à l&rsquo;époque) volait à centre américain de formation au pilotage à Tours, sur l&rsquo;actuelle base de Parçay-Meslay. C&rsquo;est à bâbord qu&rsquo;on distingue clairement la silhouette du buste de Maxime Lenoir avec un magnifique MAX en bleu-blanc-rouge comme autrefois. Jim a disposé les éléments et même redessiné l&rsquo;inscription « Ajt Lenoir » sur le modèle des peintures sur fond bleu qu&rsquo;on peut voir sur les fuselages de la Patrouille de France. Celle de l&rsquo;Alphajet E42 du Solo Display est particulièrement réussie car elle est sur fond blanc. Ceux qui ont eu la chance de l&rsquo;approcher peuvent témoigner de la beauté de l&rsquo;ensemble.</p>


<p>De même que MAX repart pour des séries de boucles et de vrilles, l&rsquo;Alphajet Solo Display renaît de ses cendres. Les deux pilotes tourangeaux on commencé leurs représentations en France et en Espagne (à Léon). Ils ont survolé les 24 Heures du Mans le 17 juin. D&rsquo;après ce qui est prévu, pour l&rsquo;instant, ils seront à l&rsquo;affiche aux meetings aériens énumérés en fin de page.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">I had already written about that in my book <a href="https://www.amazon.fr/dp/1541120019/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" class="broken_link">UNE AUTRE HISTOIRE DE L&rsquo;AVIATION</a>, on pages 12; 13; 71; and others &#8211; <a href="http://hyperphysics.phy-astr.gsu.edu/hbase/Fluids/airfoil.html">Bernoulli&rsquo;s principle</a> does not explain everything. We know that aircraft fly. Strange as it may seem, Bernoulli&rsquo;s principle has often been taught for decades as the explanation of the phenomenon.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><em>Je l&rsquo;avais déjà évoqué dans mon livre « Une autre histoire de l&rsquo;aviation » aux pages 12, 13, 71, et d&rsquo;autres: Le théorème de Bernoulli n&rsquo;explique pas tout. Nous savons que les avions volent. Depuis des décennies, aussi bizarre que cela puisse paraître, on enseigne souvent le théorème de Bernoulli comme l&rsquo;explication principale au phénomène.</em></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">This explanation would make sense if the air particles split at the leading edge of the wing and come together at the trailing edge. However, Cambridge researchers had debunked this flying myth in 2012, and have recently confirmed that Bernoulli&rsquo;s principle cannot explain everything in wing lift. As you can see on the video above, the upper wing air stream travels much faster than the lower wing one. Last but not least, these air streams do not come together at the trailing edge since the upper wing air stream reaches the trailing edge well before the lower wing airflow. Isn&rsquo;t this amazing?</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><em>Cette explication tiendrait si les particules d&rsquo;air se séparaient au bord d&rsquo;attaque de l&rsquo;aile et se rejoignaient au bord de fuite. Cependant, des chercheurs de Cambridge avaient démonté ce mythe du vol en 2012 et viennent de confirmer que le principe de de Bernoulli ne peut pas tout expliquer dans la portance de l&rsquo;aile. Comme vous pouvez le voir sur la vidéo ci-dessus, le flux d&rsquo;air en extrados voyage beaucoup plus vite que celui d&rsquo;intrados. Enfin et surtout, ces flux d&rsquo;air ne se rejoignent pas au bord de fuite puisque le flux d&rsquo;air d&rsquo;extrados atteint le bord de fuite bien avant le flux d&rsquo;intrados. Étonnant, n&rsquo;est-ce pas?</em></p>

Note that there are four <strong>stacks</strong> in the vicinity of London. The word « stack » means « holding pattern » here. However, stack can mean another thing in aeronautical and general English. For instance:</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><em>Notez qu&rsquo;il y a quatre « stacks » aux environs de Londres. Le mot « stack » signifie ici « circuit d&rsquo;attente ». Cependant, stack peut vouloir dire autre chose en anglais aéronautique et général. Par exemple:</em></p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p style="text-align: justify;">What is more natural than looking back over major aviation innovations of the Great War today, the anniversary of the Armistice? Here is a very interesting video posted by the BBC on how the fighter pilots dealt with reconnaissance, bombing missions and dogfight techniques. Primitive flight controls are well explained as is the interest of performing missions with a triplane aircraft &#8211; three sets of wings are necessarily more narrow, providing the pilot with a better visual field.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">From the flimsy Blériot XI to Sopwiths and Fokkers, the first aces developed early methods that are always taught in fighter schools even though beyond-visual-range air combat has taken over since. Major Charles Tricornot de Rose was considered by many as the father of air fighting as early as 1914. Then as shown in this video, the German ace Oswald Boelcke laid out a first set of rules for dogfighting called the Dicta Boelcke. Pilots&rsquo; life expectancy was not measured in years but in weeks.</p>

<p>The British <strong>Harriers</strong> were to be replaced by the <strong>F-35C</strong>s. Do you remember? You may have learnt from the recent news that the carrier variant of the Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Joint Strike Fighter &#8211; CV JSF (Carrier Vessel variant&rsquo;s Joint Strike Fighter) &#8211; F-35C was <strong>unable to catch the wire onboard the aircraft carrier</strong> during the latest landing tests.</p>
<p>Strange as it may seem, the F-35C&rsquo;s designers may have not forecast what would unfold during a test flight while landing on an aircraft carrier:</p>
<p>The <strong>arresting hook</strong> (<strong>tailhook</strong>) never engaged the arresting wire as the clearance between the tail hook and the main landing gear&rsquo;s tyre tread is too short for such a speed. An <strong>F-35C Lightning II</strong> missing her carrier landing has been reported even though some U.S. officials would have dismissed such information which might result from simulated tests.</p>
<p>Added to that is a software bug which had grounded the CV JSF for 6 days a few month earlier for the fifth-generation fighter aircraft might have encountered <a title="F-35C - CV JSF" href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/F-35C#F-35C" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">wing-folding input</a> while flying!</p>
<p>As a result, the British Ministry of Defence might find a Plan-B solution as these design flaws, and <a title="F-35 - Concerns over performance and safety" href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lockheed_Martin_F-35_Lightning_II#Concerns_over_performance_and_safety" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">some others which date back to November 2011</a> are deemed unacceptable for such an expensive fighter aircraft &#8211; $139.5 million for the F-35C (CATOBAR &#8211; Catapult Assisted Take Off But Arrested Recovery), and $150 million for the F-35B (STOVL &#8211; Short Take-Off and Vertical Landing). The latter can land on carriers but she is more expensive, and the JSF program costs have already increased several times.</p>
<h4>Moreover, the JSF would not be able to fire AMRAAM air-to-air missiles as reported in this video:</h4>

<p>And there&rsquo;s even more: according to <a title="U.S. DoD - F-35 Quick Look Review " href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lockheed_Martin_F-35_Lightning_II#cite_note-104" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">a Pentagon study team report</a>, 13 areas of concern that remained to be addressed in the F-35 would have been identified. For instance, the Helmet Mounted Display System (HMDS) would not work properly&#8230;</p>
<p>The British <strong>MoD</strong> is therefore considering the purchase of either <strong>F/A-18E Super Hornets</strong> or <strong>RAFALEs</strong> for the <strong>RAF</strong>. The French Dassault which has already lost the Swiss NAC tender due to replace the Swiss Air Force&rsquo;s F-5s, would be proposing a new offer with 18 RAFALEs at a cost deemed lower than the 22 SAAB Gripens&rsquo; one according to the Swiss press.</p>
<p>The <strong>RAFALE</strong> is still in competition with the <strong>Eurofighter</strong> in the <strong>Indian MMRCA tender</strong>. the Indian officials are expected to make a decision this week. To be continued&#8230; ==&gt; We have just learnt (on January 31, 2012) that the RAFALE has won the MMRCA tender&#8230; <img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/15.0.3/72x72/1f642.png" alt="🙂" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /></p>

<p>Scary flight onboard British Airways BA 0206 &#8211; It happened over the Atlantic Ocean at 35,000 feet on Friday January 13, 2012 at 03.00 AM.</p>
<p>The passengers were given the scare of their lives by an emergency message which said that the aircraft was about to crash into the ocean, and that they have to brace themselves for impact. It just was not true, as the message was pre-taped, and was sent-out by mistake. The flight attendants dashed into the cabin to calm down the panic surging. Then, an announcement added that such warnings &#8211; if re-iterated &#8211; should be diregarded.</p>
<p>British Airways has apologized to the people who were onboard BA 0206 for this incident. Watch the video:</p>

Gibraltar airport could have been part of it as a route (yes, you&rsquo;ve well read) crosses its runway.</p>
<p>It must be very difficult to set up such ranking. This is what <a href="https://www.airfarewatchdog.com/" title="Top 10 thrilling airports">AirfareWatchdog</a> has tried to do. Among them, a striking view of Courchevel airport at an altitude of 2,008 m featuring a steep slope in the middle of its runway.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">No other fighter aircraft will be as omnipresent at the Paris Air Show as the Rafale as it has been shorlisted for India&rsquo;s <a href="https://airforces.fr/2011/04/29/indias-fighter-aircraft-deal-rafale-and-typhoonstillincompetition/">MMRCA</a> (Medium Multi-Role Combat Aircraft) tender along with the Eurofighter. The IAF (Indian Air Force) is to order 126 multirole fighter aircraft for a deal of up to $10 billion. The <a href="https://airforces.fr/2009/12/20/rafale-vs-typhooneurofighter/">French Dassault Rafale</a> is still in competition with the Swedish SAAB JAS 39 Gripen, and the American F/A-18E/F Super Hornet in <a href="https://airforces.fr/2011/02/09/brazil-to-buy-u-s-f-18s-instead-of-french-rafales/">Brazil</a>.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">The Rafale also remains with the Gripen, and the Eurofighter in the <a href="https://airforces.fr/2008/10/18/rafale-evaluation-in-switzerland/">Swiss NAC competition</a> in order to replace the Swiss Air Force F-5s. The <a href="https://airforces.fr/2011/02/20/french-fighterjets-andor-pilots-possibly-superior/">French Air Force</a> has already demonstrated through the Rafale its combat readiness in Afghanistan, and over Libya. Its brand new reconnaissance pod Reco NG is now flying, and it managed to strike moving targets with its laser-guided AASM &#8211; Air-to-Ground Modular Weapon &#8211; beyond all expectations.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Its new Thales RBE2-AA <a href="https://airforces.fr/2010/06/07/f-16-anapg-80-aesa-radar/">AESA radar</a> is still being developed. It has already been tested, and should be fully operational next year.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">ToT (Transfer of Technology) has been pledged for the Rafale if the Indian government were to make its procurement decision.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><u>Sunday 5/22/2011 &#8211; Breaking news</u>:</p>
<p>The Grimsvötn volcano began erupting yesterday. It is located underneath the uninhabited Vatnajokull glacier in southeastern Iceland. As it has been sending ash into the skies up to flight level 650 i.e. 65,000 ft or around 20 kilometers or 12 miles.</p>
<p>The European fleets might be grounded due to the spreading of an ash cloud which is forecast to drift over Scotland on Tuesday &#8211; May 24, 2011 &#8211; and expected to reach France and Spain by Thursday or Friday. Here is an interesting short documentary about how the scientists examine the volcanic ash, and how they determine that it can pose a threat to aircraft.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>It is not uncommon for aircraft to be struck by lightning but this super heavy Emirates Airbus A380 got hit by a jagged bolt of lightning right over the pilot&rsquo;s seats.</p>
<p>A huge amount of electric energy must have passed through the airframe of the aircraft during its approach at London Heathrow last week. Amazingly the commercial aircraft escaped damage, and nobody was hurt.</p>
<p>Is it any wonder this airplane may sustain such a stress in a clap of thunder? The size and the nature of the A380 airframe seems to be the right solution to such hazards. Thanks to its thick metal structure, the plane behaved as a perfect Faraday cage:</p>

<p>First of all, it is not that simple. Last instance: The « World&rsquo;s Armed Forces Forum » has recently posted a new topic relating to this Prepa PLS Anglais post: <a href="https://airforces.fr/2009/12/20/rafale-vs-typhooneurofighter/">/rafale-vs-typhooneurofighter/</a> which was edited here on December 20, <b>2009</b>. It is very clear that this was just a post to pass rumors on to other websurfers who may not have already read/heard such gossips.</p>
<p>This post may have been deemed as a preposterous one among the aviation community. That is why I then posted this post: <a href="https://airforces.fr/2010/02/14/french-fighter-aircraft-performance/">/french-fighter-aircraft-performance/</a> in <b>early 2010</b>. Well, in hindsight I ought to add that I had forgotten that confrontation between the French Dassault fighter aircraft with the Eurofighter: the Rafales &#8211; there were <b>only two of them</b> according to the report &#8211; shot down <b>four</b> Typhoons during an exercise. Yes, twice as many&#8230;</p>
<p>The assumption that a Rafale might have shot down an F-22 Raptor left my readers in utter disbelief in <b>2009</b>. Well, in hindsight again, I ought to add that I had forgotten to quote the Korean balance sheet about the Rafale performance, as I had forgotten that a United Arab Emirates Air Force (UAEAF) Mirage 2000-9 (variant of Mirage 2000-5 Mk.2) flown by a French pilot would have &#8211; virtually &#8211; shot down an F-22 Raptor as well&#8230;</p>

<p>I would never write anything like « an F-5 cannot down any French jetfighter ». Let us get real on this &#8211; I guess that either an F-5 or a MiG-21 could down any Mirage 2000 or Rafale. It depends on the radars; the sensors; the weapon systems used that day; the weather conditions; the pilots&rsquo; training; and their skills; the distance &#8211; BVR or WVR, not to mention autonomy; etc. When I read that some people remain adamant that any Rafale cannot have downed any F-22 Raptor, I think that they have the right to take such a stance. As I have the right to believe that they are wrong in their assertion. All-in-all, everything would be rumors&#8230; So, why should they care about them?</p>
<p>The pragmatic Swiss have honestly stated that they would be interested in the French Rafale for they got the results of their demanding NAC tests. However, due to a shrinking defense budget, they may not buy Rafales.</p>
<p>As far as the Brazilian, Emirati, Greek, and Indian (for MMRCA tender) media are concerned, they have already issued &#8211; at least once &#8211; breaking news according to which their countries would not purchase any Rafale for it would be « <b><em>too expensive</em></b>« .</p>
<p>Blimey! Let them buy what they like. I do not know whether it is worth paying for such performance because with these tenders, it is not a question of purchasing warplanes but foreign policies. Nonetheless, I would not be suprised to learn that some French Rafale pilots might be eager to challenge the brand new Chinese J-20 5th-generation fighter aircraft as it is deemed to be less performant than the F-22 Raptor.</p>
<p>If it were to happen &#8211; J-20 vs Rafale &#8211; the result would remain, as usual, among the rumors.   <img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/15.0.3/72x72/1f609.png" alt="😉" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /></p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The Harrier entered in service 41 years ago. Then, the Harrier II (GR5, GR7, and GR9) took off in 1985 for the first time. The F-35 Lightning II or JSF &#8211; 5th-generation Joint Strike Fighter &#8211; should replace these V/STOL (Vertical/Short Takeoff and Landing) fighter aircraft.</p>
<p>Sixteen RAF Harriers conducted a farewell flypast yesterday while the last four Harriers left HMS Ark Royal forever. Both the Ark Royal and the Harriers are to be decommissioned under cost-saving plans. Click on the video below:</p>
