Mother of premature twins airlifted by crew from RAF Lyneham has sent her thanks to them for saving their lives

A French Air Force exchange officer flew the aircraft to carry out the mission.

UK flag - Billowing france The babies, who are in a stable condition in hospital 10 days after the dramatic rescue operation, have been called Roseanne and Joseph.

Yesterday their mother, Chrissie MacInnes, gave thanks to all who helped her babies. An emergency rescue operation was launched when she went into premature labour in the 27th week of her pregnancy. She was taken to the Western Isles hospital at Stornoway last MOnday, but bad weather made it too dangerous for an air ambulance to transport them to the mainland. Instead, a Hercules transport aircraft was despatched from RAF Lyneham in Wiltshire to fly the twins in incubators to Glasgow’s Princess Royal Maternity Hospital.

It was there that the twins and their mother yesterday met Health Secretary Nicola Sturgeon, who was visiting the hospital to launch a new drive against infections. Ms Sturgeon had a private meeting with Ms MacInnes, and also visited the twins in the neonatal intensive care unit.

Ms Sturgeon said: “I met Chrissie Mac Innes today and had the absolute privilege of visiting the twins as well. “They are tiny but absolutely perfect and beautiful little babies. “Their mum has asked me to pass on her thanks to everyone involved in their care and getting them safely to the hospital. “She also asked me to tell people that the babies have been named Roseanne and Joseph – lovely names for two lovely little babies.”

A spokesman for NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde said both babies remain stable and in intensive care. The Hercules aircraft that braved stormy weather to rescue the twins and take them to Glasgow was piloted by a French air force officer.

Major Oliver Luneau, 35, who is currently on attachment to the RAF on an exchange programme, said he was proud to have been involved in the dramatic mission.

Sending Japanese military aircraft to China might have been sensitive matter

The Japanese military could have delivered assistance in what would have been its first deployment to China since the end of World War II and a step in strengthening Sino-Japanese ties, long troubled by their wartime past.
